Job Description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head Chef to lead our team of culinary professionals in our Indian vegetarian restaurant specializing in Gujarati cuisine. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the unique flavors and cooking techniques that make Gujarati vegetarian cuisine so special and will be able to create innovative and delicious dishes that are true to our restaurant's traditions and ethos.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain menus that reflect our restaurant's focus on traditional Gujarati vegetarian cuisine, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

  • Manage inventory, order stock and oversee the quality and freshness of stock cooked food in various utensils, ovens or grillers.

  • Storing food in temperature-controlled facilities

  • Manage, instruct and train kitchen staff to help deliver the menu efficiently with attention to quality, quantity, freshness, presentation.

  • Inspect supplies, equipment, and work areas for cleanliness and functionality.

  • Order and maintain inventory of food supplies.

  • Check the quality of food ingredients.

  • Co-ordinate end to end kitchen operations during service and prep time

  • Rostering and kitchen staff management

  • Ensure great presentation by dressing dishes before they are served

  • Set up and monitor temperatures of ovens, grills and other cooking equipment.

  • Portioning food, placing it on plates, and adding gravies, sauces and garnishes

  • Maintain kitchen's cleanliness and hygiene as per Canadian standards

 

Requirements:

  • At least 7 months to 1 years of experience as a Chef, with a focus on Indian vegetarian cuisine, ideally with experience in Gujarati cuisine.

  • Excellent knowledge of Indian spices, ingredients, and cooking techniques, as well as the ability to create new and innovative dishes within the context of our restaurant's focus.

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team of kitchen professionals.

  • Ability to manage inventory, order supplies, and maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with both kitchen and front-of-house staff.

  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards, and the ability to ensure that all kitchen operations meet or exceed these standards.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and make quick and effective decisions.
